From a cultural, historical, political and social point of view, Italian opera in the “long” 19th century was a complex phenomenon commonly associated with the national discourse and the construction of Italian identity. Taking into account some crucial issues recently debated in operatic historiography, focused particularly on Giuseppe Verdi’s operas, this course investigates the relationships between opera and national identity exploring the possibility of re-reading this topic in a transnational perspective.
