Course information

The course introduces the student to forensic analytical chemistry, with special focus on applications in forensic toxicology and in the antidoping field. The first part of the course (in the virtual classroom), presents the evolution of forensic analysis, forensic toxicology and anti-doping analysis, and the basic principles of drugs of abuse, toxicants and poisons metabolism. The second part (in presence), focuses on the different analytical approaches followed in forensic toxicological analysis, with special emphasis on antidoping analysis, presenting the current list of substances and methods prohibited in sport, as well as the analytical approaches to detect them in biological fluids.

At the end of the course the students should be able to correctly plan, present and discuss a complete analytical procedure (i.e., from the study of the system to be investigated to the actual relevance of the analytical information) to be applied in the framework of a forensic investigation.
