Exercises for dictation. There is a sound file with the recording of a dictation and a separate image file with the answers, each with the same letter. Listen to the sound file first and then check you answers with the image file. Go by the letter for each exercise, and ignore the numbers you may see or hear. These are left over from the versions on the old Moodle page. I didn't have time or energy to re-record everything! C.R. |
Here are some exercises to practise reading individual words in transcription. Each exercise has a number and then a separate file with the Answers, with the same number. Obviously, look at and do the Exercise file first and then check your answers by looking at the Answers file. For some mysterious Moodle reason, the exercises are not in complete numerical order, so make sure you find the appropriate Answers file! N.B. The Exercises and Answers for no. 1 and no. 2 are all in the same file, the Answers are on the second page. |
Here are some exercises on the definitions (or descriptions) of the phonemes. There is an (a) file with the exercise and a (b) file with the Answers for each number. Do the (a) file exercise first and then check your answers with the (b) file. Remember that for the definitions of vowel phonemes, 'high' and 'close' are the same thing and 'low' and 'open' are the same thing. The exercises use 'high' and 'low', but your teacher may have used 'close' and open'. |
A video made by a British Linguist, Jane Setter, to illustrate the close(high) front unrounded vowel /i/ typically found at the end of words ending with the letter 'y'. |
Contains sound files of dictations and document files of answers to each of the dictations |

This exercise is very similar to the End-of-II Sem Test. Try it and then check your answers with the Answers which are given on the last pages of the file. |
These are the basic steps in making a syllable structure analysis. The word demonstrated is a relatively simple word with a two-consonant cluster for the onset and one consonant phoneme for the coda, so most syllable structure analyses will be more complicated |
Here are the slides for the analysis of Codas |
An extra dictation to make up for the missed lesson. The Answers are in a separate file. |

Here are tow I Sem. Practice Dictations. There is a sound file with the first dictation and then further down the page (so that you don't see it while you are doing the dictation with the sound file!) there are the Answers for you to check how you did. Then, further down again there is another sound file with the second dictation and further down from that (with the same motives!) there are the Answers. |
Compulsory Exercises to do during the break between the 1st and 2nd Semester. Print up a copy of your answers to bring to the first lesson of the 2nd Semester. There is also a Dictation to do. |
A practice dictation using words which do not actually exist, although they could, since they use valid combinations of sounds. It will help you to recognise (and write down!) phonemes rather than words. There is a separate file with the Answers. |
Here is a fairy story written in phonemic symbols. |
These are two exercises on the pronunciation (and transcription) of words containing the letter 'u' and 'ough'. |
This is an exercise to use as practice for the End-of-2nd Semester Test. The Answers are included. Try the test before looking at the answers! |
Here are the Answers to the Exercises in the Dispense (pp.26-30) on Homonyms, Homographs and Word-class Pairs |
Make up work for students who missed more than two lessons of sounds during the I Semester (compulsory).. |
