Dossier Dictation practice I sem

Exercises for dictation. There is a sound file with the recording of a dictation and a separate image file with the answers, each with the same letter. Listen to the sound file first and then check you answers with the image file. Go by the letter for each exercise, and ignore the numbers you may see or hear. These are left over from the versions on the old Moodle page. I didn't have time or energy to re-record everything! C.R.

Dossier Transcription practice

Here are some exercises to practise reading individual words in transcription. Each exercise has a number and then a separate file with the Answers, with the same number. Obviously, look at and do the Exercise file first and then check your answers by looking at the Answers file. For some mysterious Moodle reason, the exercises are not in complete numerical order, so make sure you find the appropriate Answers file! N.B. The Exercises and Answers for no. 1 and no. 2 are all in the same file, the Answers are on the second page.

Dossier Phoneme Definitions

Here are some exercises on the definitions (or descriptions) of the phonemes. There is an (a) file with the exercise and a (b) file with the Answers for each number. Do the (a) file exercise first and then check your answers with the (b) file. Remember that for the definitions of vowel phonemes, 'high' and 'close' are the same thing and 'low' and 'open' are the same thing. The exercises use 'high' and 'low', but your teacher may have used 'close' and open'.

URL The "HappY Vowel" (/i/) video

A video made by a British Linguist, Jane Setter, to illustrate the close(high) front unrounded vowel /i/ typically found at the end of words ending with the letter 'y'.

Fichier How to make a syllable structure analysis

These are the basic steps in making a syllable structure analysis. The word demonstrated is a relatively simple word with a two-consonant cluster for the onset and one consonant phoneme for the coda, so most syllable structure analyses will be more complicated
