This section of the Lingua Inglese 1 page is dedicated to Grammar, which is one of the four compulsory components of the Lingua Inglese 1 course.
In this section you will find:

3. language practice exercises
The results taken throughout the academic year are also posted here.
1. An introduction to The Grammar Test
The Grammar Test is an obligatory component of Lingua Inglese 1,
which must be passed by September 2019 in order to proceed to the second
year course, Laboratorio di Lingua Inglese. There are three exam
sessions, one in January, one in June and one in September.
To help students evaluate their level of English, students will sit a mock Grammar Test, which is an actual past paper, during their first TEXTS lesson. The results are given back the following week, so that students can have immediate feedback in order to see if they are at a corresponding level for the course. The purpose of the mock Grammar Test is to give students
the opportunity to assess whether their English corresponds to the basic
entry requirements for this course.
Three grades are given for the Final Grammar Test:
Pass
Narrow Fail
Fail
A self-evaluation in Week 1 has a similar grading system. Only those
students who get 60% or higher on the self evaluation may take the actual Grammar Test in
January 2018. Students who are awarded a low or very low mark will be advised to sit the test the following June, or even
September. These students will be required to
meet their Writing teacher to discuss whether they should continue with English in this course. A failing grade is an indication that the course, at least for this year, may well be too difficult for the student to complete successfully.
The file below contains a full practice Test, which indicates the task types used in the Grammar test and also indicates the level at which the test is pitched.
Enrolment for The Grammar Test is always done on this page. Students should sign up via the link provided for the Test session they wish to take part in. More detailed information is given prior to each test session.
On the day of the Test, students are asked to confirm their enrolment during registration. Students will be asked to provided some form of identification (unifi student card, carta d'identità, passport, driving license) and then to sign next to their name on the enrolment list. Each student is given a seat number for aula 4 or aula 7 (VSR) and then students immediately take their assigned place.
When everyone is seated, a brief intoduction is given and students are infomed when the results will be posted on this page. The Test papers are handed out and the Test, which lasts for 35 minutes, begins. No-one is allowed to leave during that time and no books, papers or mobile phones may be consulted.
When all the papers are handed in and counted, the room(s) are vacated.
3. Language Practice
In this section you will find
materials and links that will help you improve aspects of your English
which cannot always be specifically addressed in the lettorato
courses. In particular, you can work on areas of grammar and lexis which
will help you prepare for the Grammar Test, which is an obligatory
component of Lingua Inglese 1. Click on the icons to access the recommended external websites.
The first link below is to a website that offers a wide range of
exercises and quizzes geared mainly to a pre-intermediate, i.e. B1,
level. Most are entertaining and students have found them useful. On the
homepage click on Original Site in the top right-hand corner and
navigate to Original diagnostic quiz (highlighted in yellow). This quiz
served as a model for Part 1 of our Grammar Test.
The second link is to a site dedicated to Cambridge certificate
exams. There are many useful exercises and test simulations. The item
which is most similar to part 2 of our test is Part 5, Key Word
Transformations, in the Use of English part of the Advanced English
test.
Compleat Lexical Tutor is all about vocabulary. If you search for
Tests you can test your ability to recognize vocabulary at a number of
different levels. Lexical competence constitutes the core of Part 3 of
our test.
englishpage.com is a site which offers not only exercises and quizzes
but also reliable explanations of grammatical phenomena. The tutorials
on verbs, tenses and modals are particularly useful.
In the book below you will find a series of exercises whose specific aim is to prepare students for the second question of the Grammar Test. There are thirty pages in this 'book', and each page practises the structures that you might find in Question 2. To move from one page to another, either chose a page from the list on the summary on the left-hand side of the screen or click on the tabs at the top-right or bottom-left of each individual page.
A hard copy of this 'book' (with Answers) is also available in Copisteria X.
